What a shower assembly actually contains
Each layer has one job. Remove or shortcut any of them and water finds the gap. Most shower failures we hear described are not tile failures at all; they are failures at a corner, a penetration or the drain connection.
- Framing and structural support, with blocking where fixtures or benches attach
- A non-organic substrate such as cement backer board or a foam board system
- A bonded waterproofing membrane — sheet-applied or liquid-applied — across walls, base and curb
- Reinforced treatment at seams, inside corners and changes of plane
- Sealed penetrations at the valve, showerhead, body sprays and any fasteners
- A sloped base directing water to the drain, typically about a quarter inch per foot
- A drain assembly designed to bond to the membrane, so the connection is sealed rather than merely covered
- Setting materials, tile, grout, and flexible sealant at movement joints
Why this matters more in South Florida
Humidity here means that materials which get wet stay wet longer. A small ongoing leak that might dry out seasonally in a drier climate instead keeps a wall cavity damp year round. Combined with the prevalence of concrete block and slab construction, that produces two typical outcomes: damage that stays hidden for a long time, and repairs that are more invasive once the problem surfaces.
In condominium buildings the stakes rise again, because water that escapes an assembly can reach the unit below. This is why many associations pay close attention to bathroom waterproofing scope and, in some buildings, require review or testing before tile is installed.
Common failure points
Inside corners and plane changes
Corners move and are difficult to cover continuously. They require preformed corners or reinforced banding, and flexible sealant rather than rigid grout on the finished surface.
The curb and the entry
Curbs are penetrated by fasteners and exposed to standing water. Membrane must wrap the full curb — inside face, top and outside face — and glass hardware should be set with sealant at the anchors.
The drain connection
Bonding flange drains are made to integrate with the membrane. Pairing a membrane with an incompatible drain leaves the most important junction in the shower unsealed.
Niches and benches
Both create additional surfaces and corners. They should be built into the waterproofing rather than cut in after it, and their top surfaces should slope slightly so water drains.
Verification before tile
The best moment to confirm a shower is sound is before any tile is set. A flood test on the base, visual review of corners and penetrations, and confirmation of slope are inexpensive at that stage and impossible afterward without demolition. Where a project is permitted, inspection timing frequently aligns with this stage as well.
