Signs a shower needs rebuilding rather than repairing
Recurring problems in the same locations usually mean water is moving behind the finish. Regrouting a shower whose membrane has failed treats a symptom. Once the assembly is opened, the correct fix is a new substrate, a new bonded membrane, a properly sloped base and a drain assembly designed to bond to that membrane.
- Persistently loose or hollow-sounding tile, especially near the base
- Grout that keeps cracking in the same corners after repeated repairs
- Staining on the ceiling below or on an adjacent baseboard
- A musty smell that persists despite cleaning and ventilation
- A shower pan that flexes underfoot
- Caulk at the curb or corners that fails within weeks of being replaced
How the assembly is built back
The stack, from the framing outward, is substrate, waterproofing, setting material, tile and grout. Each layer has a job. The waterproofing layer is the one that keeps water out of the structure; tile and grout manage wear and appearance, and grout is not waterproof.
Corners, changes of plane, the curb and every penetration get specific treatment: banding at seams, preformed corners where appropriate, and sealed collars at the valve and showerhead. Those transitions are where failures start, so they get more attention than the flat field areas.
Tile layout decisions
Format and pattern
Large-format porcelain minimizes grout lines and reads calm; smaller tile and mosaics give a floor more traction and let a shower base slope in multiple planes. Vertical stacking heightens a room, running bond is forgiving, and herringbone adds labor.
Where cuts land
A good layout starts from the most visible wall and the niche, not from a corner. The goal is symmetrical cuts at inside corners, full tiles where the eye lands, and grout lines that continue cleanly through the niche.
Grout and sealant
High-performance cement grouts and epoxy grouts both perform well in a shower. Changes of plane — inside corners, the wall-to-base junction, the curb top — should be flexible sealant rather than rigid grout, because those joints move.
Ventilation matters as much as tile
In Hollywood's climate, an exhaust fan that is undersized, disconnected or ducted into an attic instead of outside will keep a bathroom damp no matter how well the shower is built. Sizing the fan for the room, ducting it to the exterior with smooth, short runs, and running it after each shower protects both the finishes and the air quality of the house.
