The assembly, layer by layer
The critical word is continuous. A membrane that stops short at a corner, or a drain that is not properly integrated, is not a partial system — it is the leak path.
- A stable, correctly fastened substrate — cement backer board or a foam board system, not standard drywall
- A continuous bonded waterproofing membrane over the substrate, either sheet or liquid-applied
- Reinforced treatment at every inside corner and change of plane
- A shower base sloped consistently toward the drain — no flat spots, no birdbaths
- Sealed penetrations at the valve, shower arm, body sprays, niche and any fasteners
- A drain assembly compatible with the membrane system and properly bonded to it
- A curb, if present, waterproofed on all three faces including the top
Where showers actually fail
In practice, failures concentrate at transitions rather than in the open field of the wall. The base-to-wall junction, inside corners, the curb, the niche and the area around the valve are where water finds a path.
A second common failure is the old-style mortar bed pan without a modern membrane. These were built to a different standard and often have no effective waterproof layer at all; water saturates the mortar and slowly reaches framing and subfloor. This is why we rebuild rather than tile over an unknown existing pan.
Curbless and low-threshold showers
A curbless entry is desirable for accessibility and appearance, and it raises the waterproofing stakes because there is no curb containing water. The requirements are a recessed or appropriately built base, correct slope across a larger area, a linear or well-positioned drain, and membrane continuity extending beyond the wet zone into the surrounding floor.
Whether curbless is feasible depends on the floor structure. Over a wood-framed floor there may be room to recess; over a concrete slab it often means modifying the slab. A low-threshold entry delivers most of the benefit with far less structural work when full curbless is impractical.
Verification before tile
Once tile is on, the waterproofing is unreachable without demolition. That makes verification before tiling the last useful moment. Depending on the system and the jurisdiction, that may involve a flood test of the base, an inspection, or documented photographs of the completed membrane.
Many condominium buildings require this step explicitly, and it is sensible everywhere. In multifamily construction a failure does not only affect your home.
Questions worth asking any contractor
Clear, specific answers indicate a contractor who builds showers deliberately. Vague answers about the wet area are the single most useful warning sign available to a homeowner.
- What substrate goes on the shower walls, and what membrane goes over it?
- How are the inside corners and the change of plane at the base treated?
- How is the drain integrated with the membrane?
- How is the niche waterproofed and sloped?
- Is the shower base flood-tested or otherwise verified before tile?
- What do the change-of-plane joints get filled with — grout or flexible sealant?
